Bunded Oil Tank or Single Skinned?
Updated: 3 hours ago
Bunded Oil Tank

A Bunded Oil Tank is a Tank inside a Tank designed so that if the inner Tank leaks it will leak into the Bund thereby protecting against environmental spillage. Bunds can carry 110% of inner Tank capacity.
Bunded Oil Tanks are more expensive than Single Skinned because they are essentially 2 Tank instead of one.
In some circumstances a Bunded Oil Tank is mandatory. For example in all non-domestic settings or in domestic premises where a Tank or Tanks on the premises can carry over 2500 litres of fuel.
In other circumstances it can still be in order to have a single skinned Tank and the decision as to Bunded or Single Skinned comes down to the customers personal choice.
For domestic premises it is necessary to carry out an oil storage risk assessment which can be carried out by an OFTEC Engineer.
In brief a Bunded Oil Tank is required if…
• You are storing over 2500 litres.
• Your tank is near an open drain or loose fitting manhole.
• Your tank is within 10m of controlled water such as a river or stream
• Your tank is located where any spillage could travel over hard ground to reach controlled water.
• Your tank is located within 50m of a borehole, spring or well.
• Your tank vent is not visible from the fill point.
• Your oil use is for a building other than a single family dwelling.
